Within the week, two major reports have created a new vision for US space activities. Together they say, “This is not your grandfather’s space program.”

The National Space Council released its report entitled: “A New Era for Deep Space Exploration and Development.” It doubles down on the US return to the Moon in 2024, as well as the beginnings of businesses that want to use the resources on the Moon:

Today, the US Space Force, the Defense Innovation Unit, and the Air Force Research Laboratory released the second report. It is entitled “The State of the Space Industrial Base 2020.”

While the National Space Council report looks to the Moon and Mars, the Space Industrial Base report makes recommendations that are immediately relevant to orbits around the Earth.

Both reports see a strong role for on-orbit servicing, assembly, manufacturing and logistics.
